The Surat Fort was built in the 16th century by Ahmedabad's Sultan Mahmood-III. This fort was constructed to protect the city from the frequent attacks that had wreaked havoc on the entire city. Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier later given the title Khudawand Khan, was tasked with overseeing the entire construction project. When a Portuguese traveller named Barbosa visited Surat in 1514, he described it as a major trading centre with a prosperous seaport. Later in 1512, the Portuguese attacked Surat, and by 1530, they had launched a piratical raid led by Antonio Da Silvaria. The frequent destruction and attacks irritated King Mahmud, who declared that he would build a strong caste to protect the city from the invaders, resulting in the birth of the Surat Fort.
