Surat, previously known as Suryapur, is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is also administrative capital of the Surat district. Being the producer of textile and the diamond on a high scale, the city is also called “Diamond Capital of the World” and “Manchester textile city of India”. Moreover, it is also famed that 92% of the diamonds in the world are cut and polished here in Surat itself. The city is also named in epic Mahābhārata, when Lord Krishna made a stop here on his way from Mathura to Dwarka. In the 8th century, the Parsis started to come down to Surat and thus the sea trade between Iran and Gujarat became more profitable much due to the famous Silk Route. The city served as a vital important sea port from various trade and commercial activities were carried out. Surat has established itself as an industrial hub during the recent years.
